Celebrating 15 Years of Education and Service in Vietnam (2002-2016)

Read about the 2016 Vietnam Project that took place June 5-25, 2016. The volunteers were: A. Holly Johnson, MD (Boston, MA); Robert Mihalich, MD (Brighton, MI); Naomi Shields, MD (Wichita, KS); and R.J. Sullivan, MD (Hartford, CT).

Since the first project in 2002, AOFAS volunteers have performed surgery on more than 1,300 patients and evaluated more than 3,000 patients in clinics, all at no charge to the patients. A total of 46 AOFAS members from 21 US states, the District of Columbia and 6 countries have participated in the project.

Step up to a challenging experience!

You have heard of interesting vacations in Europe, boat cruises through Alaskan waters, mountain climbing, and kayaking in scenic placVietnam logo no yr.jpges, however, the AOFAS has an even better adventure in mind for its members. It offers beautiful scenery, foreign language and unusual foods, and involves stepping out of your comfort zone -- both clinically and personally. It also affords the opportunity to do something truly special for others and return home with memories that will last a lifetime. Consider volunteering!

Surgeons spend one or two weeks working side-by-side with Vietnamese orthopaedic surgeons -- teaching, seeing patients in the clinics, and performing surgery. AOFAS volunteers present at the AOFAS-sponsored annual orthopaedic educational conference in Hanoi and at provincial hospitals. The annual project, scheduled over a four week period in May -- June, provides surgical care and education in provinces in northern Vietnam and in Hanoi.

The project is open to Active Members, Candidate Members, and International Members. Surgeons volunteer time and pay for their own travel to Vietnam. In-country expenses for food, lodging, travel, and logistics support for the project are covered by a grant to AOFAS from the Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Foundationthe charitable arm of the AOFAS.
